4 Tips for Novice DIYers

Planning on how you’re going to decorate is all fun and games until the time comes to actually start putting your ideas into action. It might have been easy for you to pick the colour scheme, and you may have even had an amazing idea about a wall cabinet for your living room. However, executing all of this is going to take time and a lot of effort. And, if you’re not naturally very good at DIY or have no experience, you might run into some roadblocks on the way. Here are 4 tips for the novice in you so that you can turn your dream home into a reality.

Stick To Neutral Colours

While you might have dreamed of painting your walls all different colours, just think about it for a moment. You need to think about whether that colour is going to quickly go out of style or become outdated. That’s why neutral colours are a great base for any home. That way, you can switch up your colour theme as and when you feel like it by changing the colour of your accessories. It doesn’t mean your home will be boring either, because you can spruce up any room with a good piece of artwork or a mirror too.

Declutter and Organise

You naturally have your belongings all over your home, but if you’re looking for a stylish finish, then you’ll need to declutter and organise those belongings. Consider selling or donating any unwanted items to raise some more money for your home decor projects. If you struggle to get rid of things, use the 6 month rule. If you haven’t used it in the last 6 months and don’t plan on it in the next 6 months, it’s got to go. If you don’t want to get rid of it because it has sentimental value or will be useful at some point, you could always put it in storage for safekeeping.

Get the Pros In Where Needed

There will be certain jobs during your home transformation that you simply can’t do yourself unless you’re trained. Things like changing outlet faces or building a complex storage unit in your garage might not be something you’re able to do, so don’t try it! Get the professionals in to do it where you need to. While it will cost you for their services, you can rest assured that the job was done right and most importantly, you didn’t get injured in the process.

Enhance Your Entrance Area

Your entrance area is the first part of your home that people see, so try and pay a little more attention to it. If you’ve got the space, create a seating area so that people can sit down and take their shoes off. You could turn an ottoman into a shoe storage bin and then hang hooks above to hold coats. Add a mirror and some house plants and remember that smell is just as important as looks when it comes to first impressions. Pop an air freshener to give your guests the best welcome possible into your well decorated home.
